About the Role & Service

This is an incredible opportunity to work with a well-established women’s shelter in a remote Aboriginal community, providing life-changing support to women and children facing domestic and family violence (DFV). The service was founded in the early 1990s in response to community needs and has since grown to include counselling, crisis intervention, child care, men’s healing services, and alcohol & drug support programs.

As a DFV Worker, you will be responsible for delivering immediate and ongoing support, ensuring a culturally safe and holistic response to women and children in crisis. You will play a key role in case management, crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals to external services, while also collaborating with local agencies to build strong, supportive networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Counselling & Case Management – Provide culturally safe, trauma-informed crisis support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children
  • Conduct safety and risk assessments, developing individual case management plans tailored to each client’s needs
  • Offer emotional support, advocacy, and practical assistance to ensure safety, stability, and empowerment
  • Community Collaboration & Partnerships – Work closely with local agencies, police, and support services to ensure a coordinated response
  • Establish and maintain Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with key referral agencies
  • Develop referral pathways and track referrals to ensure seamless client support
  • Risk & Safety Planning – Maintain a 24/7 crisis response roster to provide emergency support
  • Conduct regular client risk reviews and update safety plans accordingly
  • Educate and empower women to understand their rights, safety options, and available resources

  • Training & Capacity Building – Facilitate regular staff training on DFV risk assessment, cultural competence, and safety planning
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of policies & procedures to enhance service delivery
  • Participate in community education initiatives to raise awareness of DFV issues
  • Reporting & Service Development – Maintain accurate case notes, reports, and client records in line with best practice standards
  • Conduct client feedback surveys to continuously improve service delivery
  • Prepare and submit funding and milestone reports as required

Skills & Requirements

  • A relevant qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Community Services, or a related field
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification
  • Completion of DFV, trauma-informed care, or crisis response training (desirable)

Experience & Expertise

  • 3+ years experience working in DFV, crisis response, or case management
  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural values & needs
  • Experience working in crisis or emergency response environments
  • Ability to develop individual case management & safety plans

Key Skills

  • High-level cultural competence and ability to provide culturally appropriate support
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills to work with individuals, families, and agencies
  • Strong problem-solving & organisational skills to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to use case management systems & Microsoft Office Suite
