About the Role & Service
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse to join a specialist Acute Care Team (ACT) on a locum agency contract. The ACT works intensively in the community with individuals experiencing acute mental ill-health, providing short-term assessment, intervention, and support to help them regain stability and wellbeing.
Located in Southern Tasmania, the Acute Care Team is often the first point of contact for people who have not previously engaged with mental health services. Care is recovery-oriented and trauma-informed, focusing on short-term intervention (up to 6 weeks) with referrals to other services for ongoing support.

Hours of Work
ACT operates 7 days a week, from 8:30 AM – 10:00 PM, ensuring timely and responsive care for individuals in need.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support & Care Delivery

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and risk evaluations
  • Provide short-term crisis intervention and care planning
  • Deliver community-based support to individuals and families in distress
  • Provide brief targeted interventions, support and psychoeducation
  • Undertake the role of Mental Health Officer in line accordance with the Mental Health Act 2013

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with mental health professionals, emergency services, and support networks
  • Assist in care coordination and service referrals for ongoing support

Safety, Policy & Professional Standards

  • Ensure adherence to clinical practice guidelines and mental health legislation
  • Maintain accurate documentation (initial assessments, risk assessment, transfer of care etc) and follow service protocols

Skills & Requirements

  • Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration
  • Experience in mental health, crisis intervention, or acute care settings
  • Strong assessment, risk management, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Understanding of recovery-oriented and trauma-informed care approaches
